##### Here are some texts you could choose for one of the [[assignments for publishing]] (or to read just for your own enjoyment). This page is under construction! Check back soon! Let me know if you have an idea for a link to put here! ---- What does it mean to publish something? Here's what it means in [Webster's 1913 Dictionary](https://github.com/cmod/websters-1913): > Pub′lish, transitive verb [imperfect or past participle Published; present participle or verbal noun Publishing.] [F. publier, L. publicare, publicatum. See Public, and -ish.] 1\. To make public; to make known to mankind, or to people in general; to divulge, as a private transaction; to promulgate or proclaim, as a law or an edict. > *Published was the bounty of her name.* Chaucer. > *The unwearied sun, from day to day,* > *Does his Creator's power display,* > *And publishes to every land* > *The work of an almighty hand.* Addison. > 2\. To make known by posting, or by reading in a church; as, to publish banns of marriage. 3\. To send forth, as a book, newspaper, musical piece, or other printed work, either for sale or for general distribution; to print, and issue from the press. 4\. To utter, or put into circulation; as, to publish counterfeit paper. [U.S.] To publish a will (Law), to acknowledge it before the witnesses as the testator's last will and testament. Syn. -- To announce; proclaim; advertise; declare; promulgate; disclose; divulge; reveal. See Announce. Notice it doesn't say "get an agent and sign a contract with a publishing company" or even "get an ISBN and learn about SEO keyword optimization and self-publish on Amazon." The business of publishing will remain beyond the scope of this class, at least for now. But I do believe that for the aspiring creative writer, sharing your work---at least some of it, with some people---will teach you things you will never learn if you write only "for yourself." [Shared pain is lessened; shared joy, increased](https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Spider_Robinson)---and shared inner worlds come to life!  Therefore I invite you to devote some time, attention, and love, between now and the end of the semester, to sharing some of your writing in some way beyond the confines of "turning in assignments."
