This is one of the possible [[assignments for poetry]] or [[assignments for language]] you can choose.
(T3: Language)
**Choose any one of the following:**
1. Find a poem by perusing the [[mentor texts for poetry]]. Tell me all about the poem's theme, genre, versification, and figures of speech (see [Writing About Poe†ry](https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/subject_specific_writing/writing_in_literature/writing_about_poetry.html) for a nice guided example of how you might go about this!)
2. Browse as many poems as necessary from this week's Mentor Texts in order to find (and explain the specific usage of) examples of each of the following, as explained in [Poe†ry in Writing Courses](https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/resources/writing_instructors/poetry_in_writing_courses/index.html):
1. metaphor
2. simile
3. personification
4. apostrophe
5. imagery
3. Choose two or more poems from Mentor Texts, and describe, compare, and contrast each poet's choices and technique of *lineation,* as discussed in [Poe†ry in Writing Courses](https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/resources/writing_instructors/poetry_in_writing_courses/index.html).
4. Choose a poem from mentor texts for poetry, and identify and describe what you think its "synoptic moment" is (see [Poe†ry Writing: Invention](https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/subject_specific_writing/creative_writing/writers/invention/invention-examples/poetry_invention/poetry-invention-overview.html)), and why you think so. Where is it in the poem, and what effect does that placement have on the piece as a whole?
Whichever question you choose to answer, we're looking for at least a **solid academic paragraph** of explication. Contact me if you run into trouble; don't just give up!
